The William Black Lodge is a not-for-profit lodging facility for individuals and groups spending time in Montreat. It has been offering an intimate and welcoming atmosphere for over 90 years.

The Lodge can accommodate sixty-four overnight guests with a dining room serving three delicious meals daily. A number of the rooms have recently been refurbished providing all of the rooms on the first and second floors with private baths. The third floor has hall baths that work well for large groups.

With the adjoining W. H. Belk Conference and Worship Center, accommodating eighty-five people, it is a perfect place for meetings, retreats, family reunions and for groups attending conferences. The Conference and Worship Center is also available for rent for outside groups for a nominal fee.

The newly decorated living room with its mica rock fireplace is a cozy spot for conversations, games, or reading. The rocking-chair porch overlooking Montreat is a favorite spot for guests most of the year. For the comfort of our guests the lodge is air-conditioned with individual room controls.

Montreat offers recreational opportunities including fishing in Lake Susan and mountain streams, tennis, swimming, hiking, and in nearby Black Mountain golf is available.

THE HISTORY OF THE WILLIAM BLACK LODGE

The William Black Lodge was founded in 1915 as the North Carolina Home for Religious Workers. The name was changed in 1928, to honor the memory of William Black who was Evangelist for the Synod of North Carolina. The present Lodge, built in 1951, is a three level building constructed of native stone. A wing containing the W. H. Belk Conference and Worship Center was added in 1982.
